Mischief. Mayhem. Soap

Ok, ok. I did create some mischief and mayhem in my kitchen for a few minutes tonight. I didn't make "soap" though. At least not the traditional kind. (That is another project coming very , VERY soon :p) instead of soap, I made homemade laundry detergent. Close enough, right?

It smells awesome and was super easy to make. Not only that, but I halved a recipe that I found on pinterest and will be using 1/2 of the remaining ingredients to make some dish detergent.

It was funny, my husband walked into the house during his lunch break and acted like I was Walter White Jr for a second. :D

So here is a step by step for what I used. It does have some extras in it compared to some other recipes I found. I prefer to have some fabric softner and some oxy clean booster in my laundry normally so it was a no brainer to just add it to the mix ahead of time! Now, I just have to remember to pick up some citric acid for the dish detergent.

So, with that in mind, I will give you a shopping list of items needed : D

1 box of borax
1 box of arm and hammer washing powder
1 box of baking soda
1 jar of crystal fabric softner
1 container of oxy clean
1 bar of soap (zoft or flez)
1 seal-able gallon+ tub
I had to use one extra container to help mix since I wasn't able to buy a bucket from Fire House Subs on the way home.
Optional: A glass of wine! =D

 Step by Step Instructions:

First I grated the soap with a grater and set that aside. (Be mindful of fingers and limbs while grating. It's easy to scrape knuckles! Ouch!)

Next measure out half of all of the other ingredients.

Then layer each ingredient so it will
be easier to mix.

Once all layers are in your bucket stir to blend.

Then put it into a sealable containers.

I decided that I was going to test out my new detergent on some laundry. The end result will come out tomorrow (hopefully) and I will be able to review how well it worked. (Use approximately 1-2 teaspoons per load)

My next project will be making the dish detergent and if all goes well I will be able to get my hands on some mason jars. I plan on packaging everything up in cute little jars with homemade labels.

More pictures of the process will cone tomorrow as well as the exact measurements of ingredients.

For now I must head to bed. 4:30 am comes awfully early! Night!
